Although Spring has technically arrived, Chicago didn’t quite get the memo, so I’m going to take this opportunity to style a trend I’ve been eyeing for a while. We’re going for head-to-toe monochromatic or in other words, colors derived from a single base hue and extended using its shades, tones and tints. For today’s look I’m experimenting with an all grey look. Often wrongly thought of as a member of your closet’s supporting cast, we’re here to show you how there’s an endless aesthetic appeal to wearing grey in all of its various shades…oh and we promise to keep it under 50.
We’re not just talking a dash here or there either, head-to-toe is the way to go. A clean and sleek menswear look, shades of grey received a lot of attention on runways across the world. Often showing up in tonal combinations, grey was featured across all wardrobe categories from sportswear to formal tailoring.
When wearing monochromatic, there are three key notes to keep in mind: COLOR + TEXTURE + PROPORTION. As you can see in my look, no shade of grey is exactly the same and that’s what makes it wearable as opposed to something you should only see in a high-fashion magazine. Texture is also important because you don’t have a lot of opportunity to make the outfit interesting. Layering different textures is where you can really add some dimension. Proportion is just as important to create a dynamic look. Notice how my topcoat is slightly oversized up top and my joggers are tapered down below? This play on shapes and proportions draws your eye from top to bottom across the whole outfit. So, be bold, get creative, and discover all the possibilities of wearing a single color.
