It’s still bloody cold in the Windy City so I thought I would shed some light on a couple winter essentials. Since most of us only have a handful of coats to choose from this winter season, we must turn to our accessories to keep things exciting. This leads us to the first cold weather essential…the scarf. It’s a piece of outerwear that the average man fails to incorporate into his wardrobe because he either doesn’t know how it’s worn, or worse, feels effeminate wearing one. These misconceptions are unfortunate considering the amount of resources out there showing gents how to properly put on a scarf, including this one from our friends at GQ. Scarves also have a very masculine and military inspired heritage. If you take a look at old pictures of WWI and WWII pilots, you can see how they used scarves to keep their necks warm and prevent chaffing against their collars. Likewise, I think we should challenge ourselves as modern gentlemen to incorporate a scarf this winter season.
The second winter essential I want to share is a color most of you are probably not accustomed to wearing this season, if at all. I’d like to introduce you to white’s more gutsy cousin, ‘winter white’. This shade of white that can be described as cream, ivory, or off-white is more appropriate to wear in winter months and will set you apart from the blacks, browns and navys in the crowd. Just remember to keep your winter whites appropriate for the season by using heavier fabrics like corduroy, denim, and wool for example. Above all, I want to dispel that godforsaken white after Labor Day rule. Wear your whites all year round…just don’t forget your Tide to GO!
