With Fashion Week come and gone, tastemakers, stylists, and designers have pointed the way for the latest beauty trends we can look forward to in the coming months. From minimalism to shades of gloss, we’ve reviewed some of the biggest trends.
Bold lips have been big for the past few years, with bright red lipstick leading the trend. In 2019, we’ll see those hues shift more towards berry shades, so seek out reddish lipsticks with purple and pinkish hues for an on-trend approach. On the runways, fashion brands styled bright lips with understated makeup for a balanced look with just the right pop of color.
Shiny, Glossy Makeup
Shine in the wrong places can be bad news (we’re looking at you, t-zone!) but this season’s shine is all about precision and control. Glossy eyes, which are easy to achieve with a few simple products, are all the rage among fashionistas. Add your eye shadow of choice and then apply a thin coat of light, all-over balm, or even lip balm, to your lids and under your brows with the tip of your finger. Try applying a hydrating face oil to the rest of your skin. The result will be a pretty, dewy shine that is great for evening looks.
This year, keep things in the same color family for a coordinated and impactful makeup look. Wearing eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick or gloss from the same color family (think lively purples, rust-reds, and pale pinks) will tie your look together and intensify all of your face’s main features. Plus, you can invest in products that do double-duty, like all-over color sticks, layering pigment where you want to put more emphasis and going sheer in other places for a style that’s both pretty and bold.
The makeup industry is tilting toward responsible
products, so this year you can expect to see ethically-sourced, green beauty
products and packaging will soon take the shelves by storm. With advances in
formulas and technology, these clean beauty brands can offer the same
pigmentation and staying power you love from traditional makeup. Look for skin care ingredients and brands
that are certified organic, vegan, and eschew animal testing, such as ILIA, 100 Percent Pure, and Honest Beauty.
The 90s Are Back
If it’s not clear by the current revival of 90s fashion favorites, the decade is back in a big way. This year, the nostalgia will extend to makeup, with looks like matte brown lipstick, dark lip liner, cheekbone-defining bronzer, grunge-inspired styles, and frosted pastel eyeshadows. There were lots of amazing makeup looks from the 90s, but make sure you don’t adopt any of the decades less inspiring trends, like pencil-thin eyebrows! Look to your favorite starlets and celebs from the decade to pick and choose 90s makeup looks that still suit the modern era.
The Boldest Brows
Big brows aren’t going anywhere this year, though brow looks for 2019 are going to have more of an emphasis on natural shapes, versus the labor-intensive “Instagram brow” look of years past. Makeup artists have a lot of tips for bulking up your brows if you aren’t blessed with naturally thick ones—our favorite hack is to take a clean mascara spoolie, run it over a cake of soap, and gently brush the spoolie over your brows for natural, easy volume. Of course, products like brow gels and brow mascara will also help you get that definition you’re looking for.
Say goodbye to multi-step makeup for everyday occasions. The minimalist trend has crossed over to makeup, with fashion mavens choosing to show off their natural assets using just a few crucial products. Your skin will be the foundation of this look, so start with a BB or CC Cream to even out your complexion, adding a bit of concealer as needed. Mattifying powder will reduce any shiny spots, and from there the rest of your products will add subtle definition. A swipe or taupe eyeshadow, a single coat of mascara, some brow gel (tinted or clear), and a little lip balm will be all you need to tackle the day ahead.
Multi-Color Smoky Eyes
Smokey eyes have been a mainstay in many women’s makeup arsenal for a while now, but the new variation on smokey eyes is totally unique to 2019. While darker hues will still be the basis for your smokey eye look, jewel tones that incorporate an ombre range of color were huge on the runways, with makeup artists blending violet and forest green shadow into the eye crease and accenting with flares of bright color for the inner eyes and center of the lid. The effect: a totally dynamic and mesmerizing style that’s perfect for going out on the weekends. Snag a coordinated eyeshadow palette and a few great brushes and have fun experimenting with new ways to wear color.
Bright Liquid Liner
On the other end of the spectrum from the minimalist makeup camp are the new, bright hues being applied to the eyes with liquid liner. This 60s-inspired look is a great way to infuse your day with a shot of color. Popular shades include teal, green, white, and even orange and yellow. During the most recent New York Fashion Week, some makeup artists achieved this look by attaching colored tape to model’s faces to set off their eyes, but for the rest of us who have a little less time on our hands, a similar look can be achieved with the help of your favorite liquid liner brand.
Remember, makeup is all about enhancing your natural features (and maybe even downplaying certain areas). Have fun, try new routines, and express yourself by mixing and matching this year’s biggest trends in a way that is unique to you!
