I met with Monica recently for coffee and immediately felt her warm soul and gentle presence. Monica Royer is the founder of Chicago based children’s line Monica + Andy, all inspired by her little girl. We started chatting about her family and her childhood. Soon I realize that the mother-daughter relationship with fashion has only continued with Monica, since her mother made clothes for her as a child, ‘I have always loved fashion. When I was young my mom used to sew all my clothes (she is quite talented) and she would always make me dresses. I was the only person in college who did not own a pair of jeans. I love dresses and I am obsessed with fashion!’.
Monica was born and raised in the western suburbs of Chicago to a multi-ethnic parents. Her father, a professor at University instilled the joy of reading in his children and to this day, she loves reading (after Fashion, of course!). ‘My parents are the two people I admire most in the world. They made every sacrifice so that my brother and I could have everything we needed’, she tells me a little about her parents.
What were your earliest childhood fashion memories?
Great question! My earliest childhood fashion memory was posing for a casual holiday photo in a full ankle length dress with with ruffles at the shoulders. As far back as I can remember I always had to wear a new dress on my birthday.

What inspired you to start Monica + Andy?
My daughter was my number 1 inspiration for starting Monica + Andy. I felt like there was a need for better e-commerce options and I also figured that customer service mattered. My design inspiration comes from my mom and all of the other moms that I work with. I had a huge desire to build a company with moms at every level. I am always amazed and inspired by all of the talent that I am surrounded with.
