Did you know that what you breathe is as crucial as what you eat? We all want to smell good and look youthful–– but there shouldn’t be a hidden health cost set to undermine your vital state of well-being that comes along with that. In this article you will learn what essential oils are, why and how they are beneficial to use versus synthetic fragrance, and why the grade is so key to consider when choosing a brand, so you can receive the health benefits of essential oils you would expect when working with them.
Before I share the benefits of using essential oils, I think it’s best to first talk about how essential oils (scent and fragrance) work and how they affect the body so you’re completely informed about this ancient aromatic science.
Skincare items, household cleaners, and medicinal products contain aromatic chemical constituents that travel to the bloodstream and/or the brain. Scents are inhaled, get transported through the olfactory bulb and then reach the limbic system of the brain. This means they can affect your mood in a matter of seconds.
Your limbic system is not only where you process scents but also where you process memories, emotions, and trauma. And your sense of smell is ten-thousand times stronger than any of your other senses so it’s a powerful way to shift certain unwanted behaviors and elicit memories.
Have you ever smelled something and noticed how quickly it triggered a memory? Once you inhale a scent, it only takes twenty-two seconds to trigger a neural response in the brain. The smell of pea soup: Grandma’s house. The scent of a cologne: A past boyfriend. The scent of pine needles and cinnamon: Christmas! Or smelling something unfavorable, like the stink of jet fuel: that can cause the onset of a headache or nausea telling you there’s a connection to scent and a physical response that may also have a memory attached.
If your skincare, household and medicinal products are made with synthetic versions of scent, here’s where fragrance can get tricky and dangerous. Synthetics are known as neurotoxins and can cause hormone disruption, immune system interference, neurological problems (anxiety, depression), and respiratory issues, to name just a few.
Toxic load from synthetic fragrance is not just one of the most underestimated areas of health and wellness because it is a known contributor to asthma, auto-immune disease, ADHD, and cancer but it is now being called the new “second-hand smoke.”
We are exposed to over two-hundred synthetic chemicals a day from a list of three thousand. These chemicals pose serious health threats and they are everywhere: perfumes, toothpaste, hand soap, deodorant, shampoos, conditioners, plug-ins, dryer sheets, and the list goes on.
The dangers of perfumes are often underestimated because we don’t feel the disruption and breakdown on a daily basis. It takes years and often decades for their harmful effects to be apparent. Ever noticed where women spray commercial perfume? The neck. That’s where the thyroid is located. Synthetic ingredients are a known contributor to thyroid disease.
But don’t worry, there’s a much better and safer way to surround yourself in scent and keep using products that you want and need to use “on the daily” so you can literally breath in wellness instead of poisons!
Enter Essential Oils: Not just any brand of essential oils but doTERRA Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils. I’ll share more about their grade, testing, and purity in a moment but first, let’s talk about the benefits of essential oils and how essential oils benefit the body.
The Composition
Essential oils are pure plant extracts that are extracted from the flowers, stems, leaves, bark, seeds, and roots of the plant and are used for our health purposes. They are typically distilled or cold-pressed (citrus) in a delicate process to capture the essential oil of the plant.
Essential oil benefits and usage can be dated back to the Egyptians (medicinal and beautifying uses) and Hippocrates (who loved Oregano for his patients) which tells you they have been around for thousands of years. They were, and I believe should still be, our first reach for health care before anything synthetic is introduced to the body.
When the body falls out of balance, essential oils help to restore the lost or disrupted harmony. Here’s how they work: essential oils contain microscopic molecules (40 quintillion molecules per drop) that act as cellular cleansers which support proper DNA and mitochondrial function of the cell. Due to their unique molecular make-up, they can pass through the cell membrane, thwarting any unwanted pathogens from the cell, thus allowing for proper apoptosis and cellular regeneration with their mighty presence.
Essential oils are carbon-based molecules that are 50% to 70% stronger than herbs. They marry naturally with the body, work very quickly, and do not build up resistance in the body over time; therefore, there is no addiction, dependency or intolerance to be concerned with when working with them. Think: concentrated green juice in tiny droplets! Nature’s nutrition and medicine for just pennies per drop. Peppermint essential oil is just eight cents a drop.
The Grade
When getting started using oils, it’s extremely important to know that no two grades are created equal. Rigorous unmatched third-party scientific laboratory testing as well in-house scientific testing is what sets doTERRA apart from all the rest to assure they meet up to high scientific markers. They are now insisted upon in dozens of hospitals for staff members (to reduce stress) and for patients (to expedite recovery and reduce infection).
When you work with CPTG, you can rely on the efficacy that you’d expect from working with an essential oil every single time. Why? Their bottles contain an expiration date and a lot number so you can review the scientific test results online, two forms of transparency that no other company in the industry currently matches.

CPTG essential oils are beneficial to the body because they are plants that help restore vitality to the body’s system in the absence of side-effects. It’s a bonus that they are the most affordable form of true healthcare we have.
